Rio Grande/Rio Grande Estuary & the Lower Laguna Madre Area

Updated March 2012

Rio Grande basin area The Expert Science Team is expected to submit its recommendations on the amount of water necessary to ensure a sound ecological environment to the stakeholder committee on June 1, 2012. The submission deadline was originally scheduled for March 1, 2012, but was recently extended. The stakeholder committee then will have until September 1, 2012 to submit its recommendations regarding environmental flow standards and strategies to meet those standards to the Texas Commission on Environmental Quality (TCEQ) and the Environmental Flows Advisory Group. Please see the TCEQ website for meeting details and to sign up for updates.

After the stakeholder committee submits its recommendations, TCEQ will have one year to adopt environmental flow standards for the Rio Grande/Rio Grande Estuary & the Lower Laguna Madre Area. This will be a formal rule-making process and there will be an opportunity for public comment prior to these standards being put in place.

Please contact Jennifer Ellis at ellis@nwf.org or 512-476-9805 x756 if you would like to be kept informed about the process in this region.
